In Kikwit, an economic and political town in the Kwilu province in the south-west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a traditional practitioner known as “De Papa” claims to treat and cure diabetics using medicinal plants. His aim is to ensure that diabetics no longer suffer from psychosis or die from the disease.
A few days ago, Dr De Papa expressed his views in an interview with a number of journalists, and during regular special broadcasts on local community radio stations.
“The world is changing. Research continues. I’ve been doing this since 1992. Note first that scientists define diabetes as a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin, or when the body is unable to effectively use the insulin it does produce. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. Diabetes is a disorder in the assimilation, use and storage of sugars from the diet. This results in high blood glucose levels, known as hyperglycemia. In the absence of diabetes, normal blood glucose levels are between 0.70 and 1.10 g/l,” he says.
Regarding his treatment, he informs us that he treats the patient for 20 days, no more, no less, using medicinal plants processed using a formula he doesn’t deliver.
“After 20 days of treatment, the patient undergoes further clinical examinations to confirm that he or she is no longer diabetic. He can eat sugar again, as well as other foods that normal people eat. Diabetes sufferers need have no fear. Wherever they are, all they have to do is contact me at +243833191045. Those who are here in Kikwit should not hesitate to come to Boulevard National, commune of Nzinda, opposite the MLC (Mouvement pour la libération du Congo) office, where they will see a sign reading ‘Traitement à base des plantes médicinales Dr De Papa’”, he explains.
For their part, some of the healed patients gave their testimonies. For example, Mafungu Kisengila Joseph on avenue Kusonika N°27 quartier Ngulunzamba in the commune of Lukemi.
“I’ve done more than eight years with diabetes in my body. I came to Dr De Papa to seek treatment for this disease. I took his herbal medicines for 20 days. I came back for a check-up. The clinical examination showed that I no longer have diabetes. I hope other sufferers won’t hesitate to come to De Papa”, he testifies.
Kasanji Putulu Celestine, a resident of Mwangadibaya, on the outskirts of Kikwit, also had this to say: “I had heard about this traditional practitioner. At first, I felt a great weakness throughout my body, my feet were hot, I was urinating more than 10 times a night, my saliva was becoming dry, etc. Then I started to feel the effects of the treatment. After 20 days of treatment, I was back to normal. All these signs have disappeared. The test was negative”.
